A Short History of Voyager

We are proud of Voyager Resort and thought you might enjoy a bit of history concerning its origin. It was 22 years ago, in 1979, when "Ike" Isaacson and his wife, Blanche, came from Wisconsin to visit friends here in Tucson at Far Horizons RV Park. Their visit turned into a three-week stay which provided time enough for them to become RV lifestyle enthusiasts, even though it was totally new to them. A developer by profession, Ike's wheels were beginning to turn. He understood and appreciated the enjoyable and affordable living unique to the RV lifestyle.

The next year, 1980, Ike obtained an option on the 150 acres of land which would become the site for Voyager. Plans were beginning to take shape for Ike and his partners. With the purchase of land and a water company, several years of research, and completion of the Kolb Road extension, Ike's dreams were finally becoming a reality. Construction began on the first 750 spaces - - the beginning of Tucson's largest RV Resort.

The grand opening of Voyager was held on Saturday, October 27, 1984. This gala event culminated four years of planning. Among some of the distinct features of the resort are over 37,000 square feet of enclosed recreational area providing specially-equipped craft rooms for stained glass, ceramics, silvercraft, and lapidary, a library, mail service center, and a banquet hall ballroom with kitchen. Outdoor recreational facilities include pools, spas, sauna, tennis, shuffleboard, volleyball, bocce ball, and basketball courts, mini golf , and horseshoe pits.  2 laundry facilities, a travel desk, a branch bank, and a beauty/barber shop are additional conveniences.

Expansion of the facilities has been an ongoing project. Sites now total 1576 spaces with over 67,000 sq. ft. under roof. 4 "Super Sites" include gas grills and washer/dryers. Resort improvements over the years include an indoor pool, a computer learning center, a data port room, a fitness center, a wood shop, 5 tennis courts, a table tennis room, and a 9-hole, par 3, executive golf course and putting green, complete with Pro Shop. Other activity rooms have been added as needed to accommodate our ever-increasing numbers. To complete our services, the restaurant, lounge, store, and gift shop were renovated and our Ballroom was expanded with a new stage and professional lighting and sound. The Health Clinic is open 2 mornings a week. Peaceful Spirit Therapeutic Massage Center provides added health benefits to our active residents. Voyager Day Spa offers facials, waxing, manicures, & pedicures.

In 1992, Voyager RV Resort had the distinct pleasure of being voted the "National RV Resort of the Year" with an award presented by the ARVC National Association for RV Parks and Campgrounds. Voyager is also well known for its activity program which includes more than 200 activities for the enjoyment of its residents. Voyager recently received the Arizona Travel Parks Association award for having the "Best Recreational Programs" and also received the State and National award for "Best Community Service."

In the summer of 1996 construction began a 36-unit Voyager Inn. The Inn provides accommodations for friends of Voyager residents during their visits as well as exposure to the RV lifestyle and amenities available at Voyager RV Resort. Recently 13 additional Bungalow Suites were added for short-term guests without an RV.

After a few years of enjoying an RV, many residents decide to move into park models. Voyager has its own park model dealership and service department to provide residents the best in both sales and service with the famous Voyager "follow up" and "stand-behind" guarantee. Over 800 park models now house Voyager residents.

The Cove, our site-built Voyager Homes Community, opened in 1996. Over 200 homes have been sold to Voyager as well as Tucson residents. The Cove offers 1, 2, and 3 bedroom homes beginning in the low $100s, has its own pool, and provides residents access to all Voyager facilities.

Many residents have requested larger, yet economical, living quarters. In 2001, The Bay, a well-planned manufactured home community adjacent to the Golf Course, broke ground. Bay homes offer more space than our park models at a lower price than our homes in The Cove. Residents of The Bay will also have full access to all Voyager facilities, activities, and amenities which make Voyager truly unique.

We now have lifestyle choices for everyone as well as every amenity and convenience for year-round or seasonal residents. We thank you for visiting and invite you to become a part of our ever-expanding Voyager family.
